Back Alley Pizza

By September 23, 2016

Thin, crispy crust. Savory, seasoned sauce. Tasty, hearty meats. Topped with the perfect amount of melted cheese. Sounds like heaven, right? Close. It’s Newton, Kansas! Setting itself apart as the only place around to get delicious brick-oven pizza, Back Alley Pizza is a rare gem in the world of Italian pie joints.

Found in the heart of downtown Newton, Back Alley creates a culture all its own. Take a seat in one of the comfy couches as you enjoy live music, the creation of local artists.  Play cards with your friends on the rustic-finished tables as you enjoy any number of coffee creations from Norm’s Coffee Bar, conveniently located at the same address.  The atmosphere of the restaurant is unmatched, and at the experience alone is worth the trip. But let’s not forget the main attraction: The Pizza.

In a world of pizza huts, ranches, and papas, Back Alley Pizza is one of a kind.  While offering traditional cheese, meat, and pepperoni options, unique selections like the tomato basil with white sauce has become a city-wide favorite. Hand-crafted all the way through and cooked literally in a hole in a wall, the restaurant is the lunch and dinner destination of Newtonians and their neighbors from nearby communities.

The genius of Robert Palmer, Back Alley Pizza began as a brick oven trailer in the alley behind the building. Newtonians flocked to the oven, quickly showing Robert that his idea was a success. Soon a large brick oven was built and the Palmer family served the community delectable family dinners on large, wooden spatulas.

Though Back Alley may have started as a dream, it has since become a symbol of excellence in Newton. From humble beginnings comes new and exciting life. This is just one example of the movement happening in Newton today.

Momentum is building and anticipation is growing to see more of Newton Reborn. Join the movement as we work together to see key pieces of our city revived, rebuilt and renewed. We see a renewed Fox Theatre as a catalyst for this Newton Reborn movement, fueling more life and growth in the heart of our downtown. Opportunities to participate directly are coming soon! Invite your friends and family along for the ride by sharing this and future Made in Newton stories with them.
